I joined this club because I wanted to make friends out of my grade who have the same cultural background as me. Each week, one of the members comes up and presents an activity that is related to Japan in any way. So far we’ve played traditional Japanese card games, and quizzes related to Japanese geography or tourist places. This activity has been beneficial both in terms of my mental health and learning. As a student who is spending most of the time in school using their second language, this club makes me feel like I’m truly in a safe environment. I can express myself more freely and it is easier for me to communicate with others. Moreover, this club makes me feel very nostalgic as we talk about the culture and history of Japan, which I have been away from for several years. It is nice to be reminded of the things that I’ve learned in middle school and I believe that being aware of our own culture will motivate us to learn about the culture of others. I hope to see new members from lower grades for next year.
