In the coming academic year, I will be joining the Japanese Home Language Program and Beginner classes to support the main teacher by making sure that the younger students are actively participating in the class. I will also be coming up with cultural activities that will help the students enjoy the learning process. Since the class consists of students from grade 2 to grade 11, it is crucial to make sure that all of them are enjoying the class and are able to keep pace with the learning process.
At the end of each season, I will lead a fun activity for the students to reflect on their learning. I am currently trying to come up with possible activities, including learning the lyrics of an anime song or introducing traditional Japanese games.
I decided to apply for this position because I personally find my connection to my home language very significant. It is a big part of my identity and I hope the younger students will keep in touch with their own culture. Moreover, I was excited to help beginners learn Japanese because it is such an interesting language with a purposeful history. I know that this activity will definitely help me get out of my comfort zone as I will need to talk to students from different age groups and will need to communicate well with the main teacher in order to make the class enjoyable.
