Gili Eco Trust #3

After conducting a survey with the high school students, we moved on to the stage where we come up with potential ideas to reduce paper waste on our campus. Through the survey, we discovered that many students found the blue notebook unnecessary in certain subjects and that many pages are left blank. Hearing the students’ voices, we came up with the idea of creating new notebooks from waste papers. We are hoping to deliver this notebook to local schools and to junior school classrooms. One of the challenges that we faced was the conversation with the service office. Teachers in the service office are often very busy with a large number of services and new projects moving within the school, and it could be difficult for them to have a meeting with us. In order to deliver our plan and message to the service office, we made engaging slides that concisely explain our plans.
Following a discussion with the activities office, we decided to modify our plan slightly in order to respond to the needs. According to the service office, there have been many clubs/services that attempted a similar project, however, none of them were able to get the system to the point where it truly operated smoothly. We had an opportunity to ask about some of the things that did not work well and the activity office mentioned that it is very important to clearly state the type of paper/notebook we are looking for. In previous years, the system was not very effective as people left all kinds of books/magazines even though the service was looking for a partially used notebook. We acknowledged that it is crucial to explain the aim of this project in order to make it work properly.
We decided to create an infographic with a yes/no flow chart that helps the student determine whether what they have could be helpful for this project. We are also planning to create a short video that is easy to understand for primary school students. We are planning to call this system “book hotel” and collect the notebooks once a week. In order to make this system more efficient, instead of creating a new notebook, we decided to rip the pages off and distribute them to classrooms as scrap papers. This is also very minimalistic and sustainable in the sense that no additional materials are used.
The change in plan affected our time schedule, however, we were able to adjust to the change by making a clear and detailed plan for the next few months. We have set the due date for our infographic, video, and the trial run period of the system. I hope the system will operate the way we want it to and if not we can make additional changes to make the system a better one.
