Music therapy with Apex Harmony Lounge #1 : Initial thoughts

I joined this service because I really enjoy listening to music and I thought it would be interesting to help people through something that I really enjoy. During the first session, we learned about the disease dementia and how we can use music to help patients bring back some of their memories about themselves. It was inspiring to watch a video of a man reacting to the music while he usually cannot respond to any external factors. We also learned about what this service does. The main thing that we will be going to do is to find a particular song for the patient that is profoundly ingrained in their mind so that we can help them bring back their sense of identity. I’ve heard that those songs are often Singapore-specific, including Chinese, Malay music and etc. Since I like traditional music I am also excited about this. Through my passion for music, I think I can contribute to the service in many aspects. I personally believe that my strength is patience, so I hope I can make use of these skills during the process of finding the songs and when interacting with the patients. For the hard skills, since I am not really good with technology, I’m hoping to gain some skills through the production of song picking systems and etc. My main aim is to gain initiating/planning skills. I am also looking forward to deepening my understanding of the increasing population of dementia patients as a global issue.
