At the end of our FIB year, we got the chance to do a STEM project during science class as a preparation for IB.
When I heard about the project, the first thing that came to my mind was that I wanted to do something related to my daily life, possibly related to foods.
Eventually, I decided on this research question; “Is it bad for our health to eat a lot of fruits?“
My mother always has been telling me that fruits are incredibly good for our health that we should eat them every day. However, my father was always questioning my mother’s blind faith in fruits. He told us that fruit sugar is still sugar and it doesn’t mean that we can take a lot of them. I knew that fruits contain a lot of sugar, but I also knew that they contain many beneficial vitamins and fibers. Being curious about this argument, I decided to research this topic.
Under the research question, I set 4 focused questions.
- How does the human body absorb different types of sugar?
- What’s the relationship between fruits and obesity?
- What are the things contained in fruits that mild the effect of sugar?
- Which fruits are better than which and why?
Because it is a communication project, I decided to make a leaflet and a card game as my final product to deliver the correct health information to the audience.
This is how my final products look like.
I made the rule simple only considering the ratio of sugar and fiber. I add the color and price of the fruits as other indicators and set the goal of the game to make the healthiest breakfast fruit bowl.
We were told that the process and the journey of our project will be assessed as well as the final product. I realized the importance of tracking the steps that I took so that I can reflect on them and look for some areas of improvement.
